Arsenal Triumph Powered by Bench Players and Rugby Union Inspiration
Arsenal's manager believes that the "finishers" in the team might prove increasingly vital than starters in the current campaign—a philosophy he admits borrowing from rugby union.
Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard both found the net—assisting each other—after entering as late replacements to secure a two-goal win for the London club against the Spanish side in their opening Champions League fixture.
Recent Struggles and Arteta's Faith
The 24-year-old has faced a tough spell lately, losing form and being relegated to the bench, with recent acquisition Eberechi Eze chosen on the left wing.
The experienced attacker, on the other hand, has been limited a handful of cameos this season after playing 56 times last campaign.
The Gunners' boss stressed that starting on the bench does not diminish a player's importance, drawing parallels with the rugby concept of "finishers".
"They are just as crucial, if not more important," Arteta commented. "The finishers are going to be decisive in the coming months sometimes than the starters."
Squad Depth and Missing Stars
The North London side find themselves missing star performers such as the captain, Bukayo Saka, and Kai Havertz due to fitness issues, while the central defender was only fit enough for a place on bench.
This has forced Arteta to rely on new signings sooner than expected, with several of them named in the lineup against the Bilbao-based outfit.
Arteta confessed that leaving players out is emotionally challenging, but praised the impact of both Martinelli and Trossard after initially benching them.
"Very pleased because it is hard emotionally to leave players out," Arteta said. "Each occasion you announce the line-up, you are disappointing a group of players."
Team Spirit and Confidence Boost
The Brazilian, who has been a essential component under Arteta, faced a dip in form that led to discussion among supporters about his place in the side.
He was conscious about external opinions and it affected his self-belief, despite scoring double figures across all competitions—featuring a standout strike in the Champions League last eight clash against Real Madrid.
Arteta has always shown faith Martinelli in important matches and was delighted to see the player play a decisive role in this victory.
"He fully deserves it," said Arteta. "I adore Martinelli. The way he applies himself, dedication, optimism—everything he offers for the squad."
Arsenal players ran to celebrate with him after he scored, with the defender pointing at the name on the shirt in before the traveling supporters.
"That's the spirit," added. "It's reasons like this I truly enjoy being around them every day. The way they support each other is genuine."
"They desire the success for each other and they appreciate someone who works hard consistently like Gabi does."
"I was certain that Gabi would respond in this manner. You challenge Gabi, he rises to the occasion. Such moments that should boost his confidence—as he is an outstanding talent."
