{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences close call with Formula 1 track officials
Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson revealed he came dangerously close to a potentially deadly accident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two safety personnel crossed the track directly in front of him
The alarming incident took place on the third circuit when track officials were observed on the circuit as Lawson was rejoining the race following an premature pit stop to swap his damaged front wing
Competitor's Live Reaction
Shortly afterward, the team's competitor Lawson communicated to his team engineer saying: "You've got to be joking? Did you witness that? I nearly... ended their lives"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was observing"
"I exited on a new set of hards, and then I arrived at Turn One and suddenly there were two individuals sprinting across the track"
"I came close to striking one of them, frankly, it was extremely hazardous"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Evidently there's been a failure in communication somewhere but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We cannot comprehend how on a ongoing race track safety personnel can be permitted to just run across the track in such a way. I don't understand the reason, I'm certain we'll get some sort of explanation, but it really can't happen again"
Formal Inquiry in Progress
Formula 1's governing body, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is thoroughly reviewing the situation
"Following a turn one incident, race control was notified that fragments were located on the track at the critical section of that bend" commented the FIA
"In the third rotation, safety personnel were alerted and made ready to enter the track and clear the fragments once every vehicle had gone by"
"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had entered the pits, the orders to send personnel were withdrawn and a caution signal was raised in that area"
"We are still investigating what transpired after that point"
