Nuno Espírito Santo feels it will be a gradual process to establish a unique playing style at West Ham United. The former Nottingham Forest manager, who is settling in to his latest role, aims to bond with the organization’s traditions on an emotional level.

Hired after the sudden exit of his predecessor, Nuno explained that veteran members have been filling him in about life at West Ham. Upon questioning about his understanding of the club’s famous identity, he smiled and admitted that it is interpreted differently—for some it’s as attacking play, while different supporters prioritize heart and determination.

“That’s what I’m working to grasp every day,” he explained. “It’s more than learning—we have to feel it. I need time to absorb it. After it’s internalized, it’s vital to make it part of us.”

He highlighted that passion makes the difference, instead of theoretical knowledge. When it comes to philosophy and identity, Nuno admitted they are not yet close from making it a reality. “It’s not enough the ‘West Ham way’—we have to develop it, let’s live it.”

His time in charge kicked off with an encouraging share of the points at Everton. Questioned about the proximity he is to establishing a clear style, he replied, “In my opinion very far. It’s challenging and requires a collective push at the club. Yet it remains crucial.”

“What influences the team’s approach is not the coach,” the manager emphasized. “The team itself that influences our style. It’s essential to achieve harmony between defense and attack. It’s not possible to pushing up unbalanced, as that leaves gaps for the opposition. We must maintain defensive shape, but always prioritizing our next move when we recover the ball.”

Player Availability

The club might have available first-team members in preparation for the trip to the Emirates. Also, the manager suggested a potential return for an experienced midfielder who was omitted in the previous game. He spent some time under the manager earlier, though his temporary stay was cut short.
