The Tooth Fairy Story Film Analysis: Cartoon Adventure with a Touch of Kid-Appropriate Tween Romance

In this animated journey for preteens, the world of fairies focuses on gathering teeth from slumbering children and placing gold under their pillows. Skateboarding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about devoting his life to gathering baby teeth—a sentiment that’s completely understandable. He is just a bit more interested in the financial workings behind it all: the fairies hand over the molars to mysterious goblins, who provide metal in exchange. But Van’s curiosity is piqued when he spots a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be far from the hideous gnome he had imagined.

An Unlikely Connection and Common Enemy

Everything is prepared for an adventure with a gentle touch of teen romance (though it’s very much suitable for children). The fairy and goblin groups are estranged from one another, and nothing fuels the thrill of the forbidden to bring people as one. The two species as seen here are remarkably alike, yet each holds biased views about the other. The fairies are supposed to be entitled sorts, given to taking whatever they fancy, while goblins are allegedly dim-witted, foul-smelling, and primitive, but are in fact intelligent and technologically advanced.

Naturally, this scenario needs a common enemy to unite against, and this is duly provided in the form of some nasty spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret about their intentions: they aim to devour the fairies and goblins, and they serve as quite savage, if not especially competent, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts

There aren’t all that many animated films targeting the viewer group that is starting to experience early romances, but aren’t yet mature enough for whatever teenagers are watching instead of Twilight. Should your youngster falls into this age group, this is unlikely to be their next favorite movie, but you could do worse.

A Tooth Fairy Tale releases in Scottish cinemas from 10 October and the rest of the UK from 24 October.
