Top US Lawman Sports Liverpool Necktie at Congressional Hearing

FBI Director Kash Patel appeared in front of the US Senate judiciary committee on Tuesday sporting a necktie displaying the emblem of EPL team Liverpool.

Online Reactions

The choice of neckwear drew curiosity across social media. Firstly, it is extremely rare for a public figure to sport a necktie featuring the insignia of a company or athletic club. Additionally, Patel has not publicly expressed support for Liverpool previously—that is not verbally.

However, he has been photographed wearing Liverpool ties on no fewer than two separate occasions. One occasion was on 12 December 2024, when Patel was meeting congressional members on Capitol Hill after Donald Trump’s electoral win. At the time, he was rumored to be joining the administration. Another instance took place roughly five months after, on 9 April 2025, at a press event announcing the capture of drug traffickers by US authorities.

Multiple Ties

Interestingly, the necktie used on Tuesday was distinct from the previous one. Previous design had thick stripes and a discrete logo, while the newer tie featured narrower bands and a larger emblem—known as the “heritage tie”.

His apparent possesses several Liverpool ties suggests that his choice is not a fluke.

Heated Proceedings

During Tuesday’s hearing, the mood turned contentious on several occasions. Patel engaged in a shouting match with US senators Cory Booker and Adam Schiff. He stood by his management of the FBI, his firing of veteran staff implicated in probes concerning the Capitol attacks, and a tweet in which he announced that a suspect was in detention for the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk—a statement that turned out to be premature.

“I do not consider it an error,” Patel told the committee. “I see it as cooperating with the public to identify that there was a subject in detention.”

Political Contrast

Should Patel actually follow Liverpool, it would symbolize a stark clash of political allegiances. As one of the US’s foremost law enforcement officials, Patel has been a public face of a second Trump administration that has used authoritarian tactics to affect various areas of public life.

This includes operations by ICE in open areas that have resulted in the arrest of many of immigrants irrespective of their legal status or nationality. It also includes the dispatching of government officers to liberal US cities in due to alleged higher offense levels—claims that have been debunked.

The Club’s Identity

Liverpool, on the other hand, is recognized to be one of the more left-leaning clubs in Europe, from one of the most liberal cities in the UK.

Legendary Liverpool coach Bill Shankly once said: “I am convinced the only way to live and to be truly successful is by teamwork, with everyone supporting each other, everyone assisting each other, and everyone having a share of the rewards at the end of the day.”

Although the operations of Liverpool have changed in recent times, traces of socialist ideology persist. Former manager Jürgen Klopp, who led the club to multiple triumphs from 2015 to 2024, described his personal beliefs by remarking: “If I am doing well, I want others to do well, too. If there’s something I will never do in my life is vote for the right.”

Historical Tensions

The club’s supporters also have a significant history of opposition toward law enforcement. Much of this originates in the Hillsborough tragedy of 1989, which killed 97 Liverpool fans. At first, police accused the crowd of hooliganism and drunkenness. Subsequently, separate investigations revealed that the stampede was due to serious failures by authorities, who had misled the public to shift responsibility.

The Director’s History

Patel rose to prominence after the events of 6 January 2021, when he promoted a legal defense fund for those arrested in connection with the Capitol breach. A career prosecutor and advisor to conservative figures, Patel used his association with the previous Trump government to pursue business ventures and a career in broadcasting. In both capacities, he advanced several unproven claims, including discredited assertions of voting irregularities and misleading statements about Covid-19 vaccines.

Liverpool open their European campaign on Wednesday on home turf against Atlético Madrid.
